Green Apple Award Winners 2015

Fujitsu UK, the world’s third largest IT Company, has been recognised for its outstanding efforts in the environmental field with an invitation to the prestigious Green Apple Awards, presented annually at the Houses of Parliament.

In conjunction with Specialist BeMS Engineers, Smart Controls Group, Fujitsu impressed the judging panel with an innovative approach to a project which saw energy consumption reduced by 66% by improving the environmental controls at their Prestigious Manchester Campus, Central Park.

As more and more companies look to use technology to minimise their environmental impact, Fujitsu has focused efforts on using the Carbon Trusts Standard as a framework for reducing the component of their carbon footprint that they have the most control over, that is the energy used for business purposes, specifically on-site HVAC.

Working closely with Smart Controls Group and ISS Technical Services Facility Management, Fujitsu identified simple ways they could make significant reductions in energy consumption at their offices, which would in turn lead to large cost and CO2 savings.

Director of Smart Controls Group, said “With the installation of air quality sensors and variable speed motors, the Building Management System is now able to reduce fan speeds according to the office environmental demand rather than work permanently at full capacity as the system previously did. I am thrilled that Fujitsu is being recognised for its investment in the environment. We are proud to be working with them to help them achieve further CO2/Energy reductions”

Joanne McIntyre, the Facilities Manager at Fujitsu UK’s Manchester commented, “We are excited to be finalists for these prestigious awards. We take our responsibility to the environment very seriously and this project has been very simple but highly effective in reducing our energy consumption. Fujitsu believes its products and services can transform society, and where better to start than with our own buildings.”

The reductions equate to savings of more than £20,000 in electricity costs and an annual reduction of over 107 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The cost to Fujitsu for this Energy Reduction Plan has a payback time of under 15 months and surveys have been completed to try and replicated this at other sites across the North West and beyond.

The previous winners of the Green Apple Awards have included CBRE, Kier Construction, BBC and Tesco.

We also take corporate responsibility seriously. As part of our corporate and social responsibility Smart Controls Group are proud to be working in partnership with Green Earth Appeal, by recently sponsoring the planting of 1010 trees in Usambara Mountains in Tanzania to offset our carbon footprint. By planting fruit trees, we are not only reducing our carbon impact by 1010 tonnes, but we are helping to provide sustainable sources of food for communities who plant the trees and to educate farmers and their communities on how to use their farmland efficiently to ensure yields year after year.
